This is the shard of shell I picked up on my hike when I was a kid (referenced in one of the first chapters in the book). When my relationship with Christine began to get serious, I told her the story and I asked her to hold on to the shell for me, telling her that it represented my childhood and that I wanted her to help me preserve my innocence and play a part in restoring my sense of joy and adventure and self.

I asked Christine for the shell back.

I gave it to my dad, who has read the book – a copy of which I also gave him. I asked him to keep it for me.

He said he would.
